Paris Hilton: Stars Are Blind
I had a chance to listen to Paris Hilton’s hot new single today–Stars Are Blind. Unfortunately, it sounds mostly like generic studio pop, without an ounce of creative inspiration or soul. Yes, can you believe it? Today I’ll write that the machines sucked Paris Hilton’s soul–however much was there to begin with–out of her voice. It’s just so bland!
According to a press release being passed around, Stars Are Blind is due to be released July 31st:
Paris Hilton’s long-awaited debut single and album releases have been confirmed. The single ‘Stars Are Blind’ is set for a July 31st release date whilst her eponymous album will follow a week later on Warner Bros. Records. Paris Hilton spent two days on a beach in Malibu, California, shooting the video for ‘Stars Are Blind’ with director Chris Applebaum with whom she previously collaborated with for the Carl’s Jr. campaign. Applebaum’s previous music video credits include Rihanna’s ‘S.O.S.’ and Natasha Bedingfield’s ‘Unwritten’.
The song lyrics open, “I don’t mind spending some time / Just hanging here with you / Cause I don’t find too many guys / That treat me like you do.” While no more vapid than regular pop, her voice has been masked with corrections, wispy strings, and other kinds of masking noise. You’ll no more be able to hear the real Paris in all that choir and processing than you could cut the White House lawn with scissors.
The music video adds a little more–Paris Hilton on the beach with a boy all over her. We expected that one, right? Here’s a screengrab, for your edification:

that video is a real yawn… I’m surprised… with her talent for irritating people, I wouldn’t have thought that she’d go boring.

I think this song shows some real maturity. Strong lyric repetition, a surprisingly wide voice range, and the notes are almost all snap on key. The continuous, non-varying “chicky-chicky” back beat puts the final nail in the coffin. I just can’t stop listening to it.
The video is also very special. Look at that amazing hair! And the smoky eyes! And the part where she steals the guys shorts. How original, even though that part certainly shatters the flow of our fantasy. Why would anyone buy an FHM magazine if they could watch this video instead?
Simply wonderful. Almost as good as House of Wax, where she gets spiked.

It, interestingly enough, sounds exactly like Paris’s new song. Except for where it’s sung by people with real talent.
But wait, Kingston Town came out in 1995, how is this possible?

Oh man, this song is a complete, uncredited remake (read: stolen remake) of UB40’s Kingston Town. It’s the exact same song. ******’ Paris.

“Kingston Town” was not originally by UB40, who covered the majority of their songs – borrowing mostly from the Trojan label – but was sung by Lord Creator. This is all good as UB40 acknowledge that what they are singing is a COVER. There is no question that Paris Hilton has clearly stolen a great deal of material, trying to pass it off as original. Presumably musical “copyright” laws mean that the original is now butcherable..? If not, Hilton is treading dangerously; we recall how George Harrison was succesfully sued by The Chiffons for ‘unintentionally plagiarising’ their song “He’s So Fine” in his “My Sweet Lord” on the album “All Things Must Pass”.
