Steven Spielberg to direct indie films

Posted in Directors, Movies by The Gossip Monger on June 11th, 2006.

Director Steven Spielberg told Variety that he would like to begin making lower-budget films at DreamWorks, after it was acquired by Paramount.

steven spielberg“I would love to go off and make a picture like Capote or George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck,” Spielberg said.

The infamous director also revealed he was originally planning on directing Memoirs of a Geisha, but because he wanted to make it a low-budget — about $10 million — art-house film, no one was willing to join him.

In all honesty, I think that the indie film industry is much better off without the likes of Spielberg, who seems to have more fun when he’s got a lot of money to play with. Although with only $10 million, maybe he would have ended that disastrous movie A.I. about 45 minutes earlier, which might’ve made it a little less … crappy.

I also heard that for Memoirs of a Geisha he wanted to film it in Japanese only, with English subtitles, for a more authentic movie. Apparently it would have saved them a lot of money, too.
